Stand-Up Comedy: The Book
Published in Paperback by Dell Books (Paperbacks) (August, 1989)
Author: Judy Carter
Average review score:

Excellent and practical book on comedy.
Probably the most useful book on stand up comedy I've read so far and i've been looking around. What amkes this book so great is the fact that it is so detailed. most stand up books give vague insights into the creation of comedy material often suggesting that comedy is like magic but Carter actually gives insight into the creation of effective comedy material. i would recommend this book to those who wish to learn how to write and perform more effectively. This book is a good guideline but you already have to have a comic mind to be good.

Excellent How To Book on Comedy and Speaking
A truly incredible book, Carter breaks down comedy performance into very tiny pieces so we ought to be able to produce outstanding material. It leaves me awestruck. With everybody near and far, high and low, saying you either have it or you don't... along comes Carter and says if you want to learn how to do it follow through with the work in this book. There are lots of projects, lists of things to do and exercises. Her blindingly insightful advise to not try to be funny is very helpful. Instead, you work on your experiences to turn them into entertaining commentary, routines or speeches. Eventually, you work you way though the process of getting laughs allowing yourself to be surprised by the positive reception. If there are no laughs you just move on having told them an interesting story. You keep working on your stories until the laughs come. It is a cross between a textbook with assignments and a highly motivational book. Carter breaks down into fine detail what makes people laugh. Even if you are not going to shoot for being a famous stand up comedian, you can learn how to spice up you speeches and conversations-to lighten up. The author does not talk down to the reader. Reading Carter, it feels like she is in the room with constant encourage that it will happen. Carter must be a wonderful caring person.

She is not saying your life has to be messed up to have a source of comedy from your experiences. She is saying it is not a negative--exploit it. She shows how humility and self deprecation can work with out bringing you down. The book is impressively easy to read, but the exercises are not easy. You will need to set aside a lot of time for the projects and exercises to make the book work for you. It must be a good cheap initial substitute for going to her school. In a relative's, guest bedroom I spotted this book that was acquired at one of her seminars. I read it and promptly ordered another of her books from Amazon. Even if I don't become very funny I will be a better speaker in the future from working through this book. Even though I have read the book carefully, I have a lot of work to do with this book yet.

At the end is a list of comedy clubs, comedy publications, and agents. The list of comedy schools is very short. It only lists her school. After doing such a great book it is exceeding easy for me to accept this touch of self promotion.

The best "how to" for aspiring comedians!
Judy Carter gives in detail what it takes to develope ones own act for stand up comedy. Her tips and workshops are great stepping tools that allow those that find it hard to free associate begin to. Stand-Up Comedy: The Book, does not leave the reader alone with tools to become a comedian but also advice. From getting up there for the first time and the "no's" that go along with that, to the booking of your first major performance, she gives all the advice one needs. If you so desire to be a comedian than this book is a must

TWO ENTHUSIASTIC THUMBS UP!!!!!!
Judy Carters book "The Comedy Bible" is a must have for anyone who desires to become a comedian, run a one person show, write for tv, or who just wants to add more humor to their life. As a working comedian for a few years now, I can honestly say that this book is the definitive read for anyone who desires to enter the world of comedy, or who has been in it for a while and wants to get better. Great job Judy!!!

Making it in the funny business!
This is the difinitive book on stand-up comedy! In this highly anticipated sequel to STAND-UP COMEDY, Judy Carter goes far beyond writing a stand-up comedy act. Although she still gives the in's and out's of writing killer comedy (in ONLY 26 days), she also gives the reader goals and contracts to determine exactly why you want a career in stand-up comedy.

Not interested in stand-up comedy as a career? No problem! Judy teaches readers how to write sitcom specs in ONLY 19 days! ALL CAREERS are covered in this book: Stand-up comedian, sitcom writer, One-person shows, writing for other comics, writing and performing radio shows, Improv, TV Warm-up, Humor writing and essays, Motivational Humorist!

If you've ever dreamed of a career in comedic entertainment, this is the book for you. Hundreds of practical exercises give the reader EVERY opportunity to succeed in this demanding field! (Am I only saying all of this because Judy mentions me, by name, on page 289? Absolutely....Not!)

I've been performing stand-up comedy for over 5 years now, and using this book, I am able to take my show to a whole new level. If you are a comedian, and you do not own this book...what are you waiting for?

An INCREDIBLE Book!
If you have a tendency to make people laugh, occasionally on purpose, you NEED this book. After years of "Hey, you're kinda funny!" and "Why don't you do an open mic or something?" I decided to 'research' my options. Judy Carter's book is a one-stop source for just such a task. Combining excellent advice from her experience as a comedy coach and peppered liberally with examples, quips, and ruminitions (I'm a big-word fan) from a veritable (see?) who's who in the comedy world, this book is informative from front to back. Her structured, schedule-based approach keeps the neophyte comic on track, whether the desired end goal is actually doing a stand-up routine, writing a spec. sitcom script, or writing more 'literary' humor pieces. The last section - covering the business aspects of comedy - also contains indispensible advice for the comic ready to chuck it all, quit his or her day job, and take to the open road. Buy it, read it, and live it.

Holiday in Your Heart

Authors: Leann Rimes and Tom Carter
Average review score:

A Great Book By LeAnn and Tom.......
"Holiday In Your Heart" is a lovely book. A Gem by LeAnn Rimes and Tom Carter.

Set in Nashville, teen singing sensation Anna Lee has come to perform at the Grand Ole Opry: A childhood dream of hers. Only, her grandmothers illness surfaces and she is left to decide whether to do her show at the 'Opry or visit her Grandma at a hospital in Jackson.

She is intercepted by a classic country singer whose identity remains secret. She gives Anna Lee guidance into what her final decision will be.

The outcome revealed in the book!

This is a beautiful story and after reading dozens of times, I still can't put it down!

A book everyone should read
Miss LeAnn Rimes, the youngest, newest, hottest country music star, teams up with Tom Carter to write the most heart-warming Christmas story ever to be told.

LeAnn drew on her own personal experiences and weaved them into this tale. The novel's main character, Anna Lee, is, like LeAnn herself, a teenage country music star. She faces a tough choice concerning her family and her career. After meeting and spending some time with [the ghost of] a country music legend well past her prime, Anna Lee makes her choice.

Due to the moral this story contains, this is one story that will remain in a reader's memory for quite awhile.

Great book to bring back holiday memories.
This book was very good. I really enjoyed it. Tom Carter and LeAnn Rimes worked good together. The book turned out great! The book talks about a new singer in the country music business, Anna Lee and the things that all other newcomers to the music industry go through. However, Anna Lee has something else to worry about. Her grandmother is in the hospital, dying. Anna Lee has to make a decision between promoting her career by going on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, or going back home to visit her grandmother in the hospital. The book is basically based on that decision. In Anna Lee's decision making, an 'unnamed' singer takes Anna Lee back to the past. The singer shows Anna Lee what she had to go through to get where she is today and told Anna Lee what she needed to do...Anna Lee made the right decision in my opinion and things turned out good for her. This book is based around the time of Christmas. It would be great to read during the holidays, or read a couple of months before Christmas to bring back old memories and get you in the Christmas spirit a little early. It is a great book to read. I really enjoyed it!

The American Boy's Handy Book

A Wonderful Book for Boys (and Girls)!
I had a copy of this as a kid and read and re-read it to the point that the cover was more tape than original material. A wonderful guide to doing things yourself, and a welcome antidote to today's passive consumer paradigm of childhood. A fair number of the materials called for are hard if not impossible to find today, but the spirit of adaptation and improvisation that imbues this book will inspire the reader to find substitutes. Some parents may suspect the fair number of projectile- launching devices described, but the book is infinitely less violent than most child-oriented television shows and never fails to stress safety. My friends and I learned a lot of practical mechanics and crafting skills, developed our hand-eye coordination, and never shot anything more fragile than a plastic figure. We did a heck of a lot more damage to each other and our environment playing soccer and broomstick polo. My own future children will unquestionably have a copy of _The American Boy's Handy Book_ when they're old enough.

A wonderful book of projects and toys a child can make
I read this book in the fourth grade and did many of the projects, Trapping, camping, snow forts, skits and plays, magic, all the things an American boy (or girl for that matter) will find exciting and fun.

I have given the American Boys Handy Book to the children of many of my friends. It will spur anyone's creative thinking, young or old!

If you like this one check out the American Girls Handy Book written by Beard's sister.

The American Boy's Handy Book
I bought this for my urban, "not-into-reading" nephews when they were 11 and 9 years old, thinking that they might not ever crack the cover, yet today (they are now 17 and 15) I found it in their bookcase well-worn. They say they've really enjoyed it, and tried several of the projects. Although its style is antique, and not quite as easy to follow as the "...for Dummies" type of how-to books, and some of the topics may no longer be of interest, I highly recommend it for all kids (boys and girls). I am buying it for my young daughters (and myself), expecting our family will enjoy it for many years to come.

Topics include "Snowball Warfare" and a whole section on Winter, "Home-Made Boats," "Novelties in Soap Bubbles," "How to Camp Out without a Tent," "Dogs," "How to Make Puppets and a Puppet Show," and "How to Make Various and Divers Whirligigs."

If you want to get your kids out from in front of the TV or computer and foster their creativity, buy this book and open it!

As If Nothing Happened

Author: Monica Carter

What Really Happened....
In Monica Carter's debut novel, As If Nothing Happened, you will find different levels of sisterhood. This is a friendship novel that deals with many relationships, and touches deep on issues that has lived within every woman at one time or another.

Joya, Jennifer, and Vyonne have known each other since college. Their friendship has been through several ups and downs. Each woman possesses her own special characteristics. One woman speaks her mind no matter how it may affect others. One woman is so used to keeping things to herself, she does not know how to share when the time is right. The other does not know real love when it is standing there in her face. Once you turn the first page into these three women's lives, you will not stop until you reach the end.

This is a great story about how women deal with different issues that are presented to them. I had an issue with the writing style. I could not put my finger on it, but the words did not seem to flow. The storyline kept me reading, but I felt as if something was missing from the form of the book. However, I would recommend it to others because of the storyline. The drama keeps you wanting to know more.

Friends through thick and thin
As If Nothing Happened is the story of Joya, Yvonne,
and Jennifer who have been friends since college
sharing life's highs and lows as if they were sisters.
Each experiences a life altering moment and chooses to
keep the event(s) a secret from the others. They
continue with their lives with the secrets untold
until a tragic turn of events causes them to realize
how far they have drifted from each other and their
families.

As If Nothing Happened, the debut release from Monica
Carter, is a novel of friendship mixed with a dash of
mystery and a dab of romance. It is a sistah-gurl book
that can evoke some deep discussions. Carter did a
good job with the development of the characters and
the storyline. However, a thesaurus could have been
utilized for the overworked words. I look forward to
reading more from this author.

Ms. Carter creates real characters
Monica Carter's book As If Nothing Happened hits so close to home. I identified or correlated Jennifer, Yvonne, and Joya with myself or someone in my life.

Character development is certainly one of Ms. Carter's strong suits. Joya, dear Joya, is like so many educated, self assured African American women today. She believes she can take on the world, alone. Whether the world wears Joya's shoulders down or not, she refuses to allow anyone to help her carry life's burdens.

Then there is loud, foul mouth Jennifer, who thought she knew everything. Of course she didn't. Not only did she not know everything, she had lost sight of how to handle her own life while being the authority of everyone else's.

And oh poor, pitiful Yvonne. We've either been her at one point or certainly have a girlfriend, who can't see the forest for the trees. Yvonne's brain just didn't seem functional. She kept running back to the same ole trifling brother. Even when she had a do- right man, she found herself in bed with the good for nothing one.

Sadly, these three women didn't trust in their relationships and allowed secrets to gnaw at their sisterhood. I wondered until the end just how close they actually were to one another. Joya hid her rape. Jennifer covered up her crumbling finances and broken marriage. Yvonne lied about a pregnancy. These were women, who had known each other since college. Yet the storyline revealed that while they were going through their tribulations, they really didn't know each other.

Also, Ms. Carter did a great job of balancing these women's foolish sides with their soft sides. Though at times you wanted to say Joya quit being so dogmatic, allow someone to help you. But you just kept rooting for her. However, it was harder to root for Jennifer and Yvonne.

While reading the book at times I was thinking, "Jennifer you need to just shut up. It's written all over the wall that your man is cheating." Like art imitating life, I related that to times I've thought the same of close friends in my life. I bet there were times they thought the same about me.

It's that and other real relationship scenarios Ms. Carter paints that makes As If Nothing Happened an absolute page turner. Aside from real characters, the plot flowed and kept my attention. It was cohesive and interesting all the way through.

My only criticism is I wanted more of the book. I hated to see it end. I cannot wait for Ms. Carter's next novel.

Firstborn (The Elven Nation Trilogy, Volume One: Dragonlance)
Published in Paperback by Wizards of the Coast (February, 1991)
Authors: Paul B. Thompson, Tonya R. Carter, Robin Raab, and Gerald Brom
Average review score:

An incredible tale of twins.
First thing I must say, I did not like the text on the back cover. If presented any opportunity at all to not read it, don't. I found myself 3/4 the way through the book and felt a lot of problems because of what it says.

This book is definitely one of the better dragonlance books. It tells the tales of waring nations, the undying love of twins, and the ancient forest of wildwood. Descriptions of this book are incredible, but there is not too much physical combat. If that's what you are looking for, read something else.

Love and tradition are important plots in the book. It starts with Kith-Kanan loving Hermathaya. However, Kith-Kanan's father, the speak of the stars, unknowningly choses Thaya to be the bride of Sithas, heir to the throne of Silvanost. Kith-Kanan begins a new life.

Definitely read this book after you have read the Chronicles and Legends. You will have a greater appreciation for the elven nations.

One of the better Dragonlance books...
"Firstborn" is definately one of the better Dragonlance books out there. It is very slow during the beginning. Most of the book drags on, but the good thing is that it goes by quickly. The book isn't long, only around 300 pages. But the ending gets a lot better and sets up for much more action to come.

The book starts out with the birth of Kith-Kanan and Sithas. Sithas being the firstborn is destined to be the next Speaker of the Stars. The brothers have a bond that is almost unbreakable, and a love that is true. But when Kith does something that angers his family, he flees and meets friends in the outer woods. Here, he learns that life isn't the same as it is in the city of Silvanost. But, in desperate situations, Sithas calls his brother back to Silvanost and events begin to unfold that are beyond either of the twin's control.

While the book does start out slow, it is good enough to keep you reading. It is full of intrigue that most Dragonlance books are lacking in. I have read almost all of the DL books out there, and I can rate this one near the top of the list. If you can find it, it is a definate must!

Excellent book
This is my favorite dragonlance book that was not written by Margaret Weis or Tracy Hickman, and I've read a lot of them(I have 103). This book was very well written. It's definately better than the other two in the trilogy. The short prelude in the beginning pulls you right into the book. I highly recommend this one!

Ransom of Mercy Carter
Published in Unknown Binding by Bt Bound (March, 2002)
Author: Caroline Cooney
Average review score:

The Ransom of Mercy Carter
The Ransom of Mercy Carter was the best book I have read in a long time. It is about an 11 year old girl who lives in Deerfield, Massachusetts. She lives there with her stepmama and her father. Also with her siblings Benny, Marah, Tommy, John, and Sam. They are an English family living in this small village with many other families hiding from Indian raids. Then one night the indians come and take all the children that they can and many of the adults. Mercy's father is away buying things needed for the family. The indian's take almost every item belonging to the many families and burn all the buildings. Then they take the children and parents on a 3 hundred mile trek to Canada. Along the way many people become ill or hurt and die. Many are murdered out of pure hatred of the indians. Mercy and her family are spared all but her stepmama and Marah who are too weak and cry too much and have their lives taken by the indians. Then the indians take the children they want to adopt and go to their villages that they live in. The Carter family is completely seperated. Then it tells what happens to them in their lives and how they live. Mercy is torn between wanting to be ransomed and staying with the indians. I really enjoyed this because it told about indian life in the villages and how life was in the early 1700s. I deeply encourage you to read this book. This is the first book I have read by Caroline B. Cooney and I am looking forward to reading many, many more. ;)

A great piece of Historical fiction
Deerfield, Massachusetts ; a home to 300, and a target for Indians in the year 1704. One night, Mercy Carter, an 11 year old girl hears the Indians coming. She knows they will attack, and she knows the men of Deerfield will not survive. Mercy is right, and as soon as she knows it, she and 200 other former citizens of Deerfield are on a 300 mile trek to Canada. When the prisoners finally arrive to their final destination in Canada, Mercy is adopted in to Mohawk Indian family. Mercy starts to adapt to her new life, and when a ransom is offered for the prisoners to go home, Mercy must make a decision.I thought this book was a great read. Cooney's writing really brings the readers attention towards the characters, and how they feel about whatever the situation was in the book. After reading this book, I would recommend it for kids in grades 6-12. I think that readers in this age group would appreciate a good historical fiction book, and if they want one I suggest that they pick up a copy of The Ransom of Mercy Carter, by Caroline B. Cooney.

Fantastic!
Some people may know that I am a Caroline B. Cooney nut. I believe this is the twelfth book I have read by her. I have loved each and every book I have read by her, but somehow, the Ransom of Mercy Carter seems to stand out. It's different from her other novels, deeper, almost. The Ransom of Mercy Carter tells the story of, well, Mercy Carter, an eleven year old girl whose town (Deerfield, Massachusetts) is destroyed by Indians in 1704. She and many other children from Deerfield are forced to march to Canada on their own foot power. Mercy, at the tender age of eleven, saw terrible hardships- scalpings, murder, kidnap, her life being pulled from her in an instant.

Mercy hated to see this happen, but she was one of the first children to begin to accept the Indian culture. She was among the first to be given a Mohawk name, and among the first to learn the Mohawk language. When Mercy is brought into a Mohawk town in Canada, she begins to accept the culture. And the question is- if ransom ever comes, will Mercy accept it?

This story touched my heart in many ways. It was another Cooney masterpiece, well-written and suspenseful. But this book was somehow different. It wasn't the typical mystery of Cooney, it was something more. It was a heartfelt yet historic story, and it has me thirsty for more information about Mercy Carter and the children of Deerfield. I would reccommend this book to anyone, boy or girl, young or old or anywhere in between, who is looking for a great novel that will have you thinking for days.

The Truth Is Out There (The Official Guide to the X-Files, Vol. 1)
Published in Paperback by Harper Prism (December, 1995)
Authors: Brian Lowry, Chris Carter, and Sarah Stegall
Average review score:

A must have for fellow philes.
This is a good behind the scenes look at the first two seasons of the X-Files. It has episode plots with backround stories and histories. I found the history of how the X-Files came into being and a look at Chris Carter to be very fascinating. It also contains helpful character guides ( which are now outdated but still fundamental ). This book is highly recomended especially if you are now delving into the world of the X-Files.

A great book for both X-philes and new fans!!!
It is a very clear and excellent book for everybody to read. I particularly enjoy the episode guide part in this book. It depicts clearly the cast, the plot, and some comment about how to shoot these episodes. Also, in these episode guides, there are many good picutres which give readers visual sastisfation. If you like The X Files show, please don't miss this book. It's really fantastic!

How It All Started
Even the most avid fan needs a road map to the X-Files (I know I do!). I have been a fan since the very first episode and I own all the episode guides, all seasons on video tape, all seasons on DVD and various other books and magazines....so, it is safe to say that I like the X-Files. This is definitely a book for the X-Files fan! It has all of season 1 and 2 with a detailed synopsis for each episode...including important dialogue quotes. It has great photographs also to accompany the stories. You could easily understand what's going on just from reading this book....it's also good as reference when something happens in later episodes that you didn't understand, to go back and find out who, why and what.

It also has all of the awards the show had won during those seasons. Well worth the money and makes a good collectible item!

Networlding: Building Relationships and Opportunities for Success
Published in Hardcover by Jossey-Bass (15 June, 2000)
Authors: Melissa Giovagnoli and Jocelyn Carter-Miller
Average review score:

Required Reading If You Want To Enrich Your Relationships!
I'd first heard about this book from several business associates, who raved about it. That alone was enough to encourage me to read it and draw my own conclusions. And I must say, after all the hype from them (not to mention the great reviews from Jack Canfield and the press), I had very high expectations of "Networlding." And I'm happy to say, this provocative book far surpassed my expectations!

These accomplished authors--obviously intelligent, and experienced in developing successful business and personal relationships--carefully differentiate mere networking from the higher-level tenets of Networlding, and this is indeed valuable. They give real-world examples and exercises to illustrate the Networlding principles, enabling you to better remember and to apply them (they're effective, fun-to-read techniques!).

And as excellent as the book is for building supportive business relationships based on shared values and goals, it succeeds equally well on another level: building meaningful and mutually beneficial personal--or social--relationships. (After all, the subtitle is "Building Relationships and Opportunities for Success"--which isn't limited to business.) With the holidays well on their way, I'm going to approach social get-togethers with friends, neighbors, and relatives with a fresh perspective and apply Networlding techniques. No more idle small talk! I'm looking forward to having fun, and to learning truly interesting things about new and not-so-new acquaintances. Who knows? I might be able to help each other in ways I can't even begin to imagine today. I've even practiced Networlding concepts with strangers while in line at the bank and at the grocery store, and met some great people! And the www.Networlding.com web site is equally beneficial, with its newsletter and other valuable elements. (I signed up right away!)

I love learning and doing new things, and so do my friends. This holiday season, gift-giving is going to be a lot easier: I'm giving copies of "Networlding" to several friends and business associates! I've already told them so much about "Networlding," the hardest part for them will be their having to act surprised after they open the wrapping!

Come to think of it: this is also a great book for new graduates...and anyone who doesn't live alone in a cave! Who doesn't want to get the most out of their relationships?

"Networlding" should be required reading for anyone who values and relies on successful relationships--from new graduates, to seasoned professionals, to people who just plain enjoy meeting others and want to forge relationships that go beyond the superficial. Now that I've read the book, I can honestly say that "networking" is just so...90's!

If we all practiced Networlding, there's no limit to what we could do together! Thank you, Ms. Giovagnoli and Ms. Carter-Miller, for putting this great concept into enjoyable and applicable words. I truly got a lot out of this book, which was hard to put down. In fact, the only "negative" of "Networlding" was that the book had to come to an end. But...the concept will go on!

Perfect for work-life balance and the success ladder climb
I am an avid reader and a head of training for a large organization. This book knocked my socks off! It has so many simple, powerful tools for becoming successful in a way that not only benefits you but the world at the same time! I've never read a book that puts this all together.

From "The Networlding Support Exchange Model" that shows readers how people actually do build successful relationships to the step-by-step process for connecting with a network of like-valued influential people (and the authors handhold you as to how to do this), I found I could take the ideas and implement them immediately. In fact, I already have connected with a couple of influential thought leaders online. It was much easier than I thought possible.

The authors also share extensive academic research done on human networks, putting into simple words, how we can use this knowledge of how people actually build successful relationships to grow our own powerful and fulfilling networks.

I personally have never seen a book like this. It is chock full of stories and strategies the authors themselves have used personally to grow their networks. In fact, the story of how they came together is a Networlding story in itself! It's wonderful to have a tool that will help me get ahead without stepping on others along the way. To the contrary, Giovagnoli and Miller show you how to get to the top and take great people with you along the way so you have lots of friends when you get there! What a great journey!

Networlding
Is swapping business-cards a waste of time? Yes, and no! This book is about taking networking to the next level - Networlding. Networking is for lazy people!

The book includes a step-by-step approach to the 'art' of networlding. Basically the book is about managing your relationships, and building/developing relationships with people who share your set of values and beliefs. It will introduce a risk to your relationships since you will be communicating your goals and values early on in the process - risking rejection. This is probably a more honest approach, and definitely the best way to find and build mutually beneficial, win-win relationships.

How do you accomplish this? The book suggests a seven step process - cycle that repeat itself. It all starts with finding out what means the most to you - your foundation. You will then learn to populate your primary, secondary and possibly tetriary circle depending on the nature of your current relationships. How do you create a mutual exchange, and nurture your relationships is the next question. Before it is time to re-create your networld, the book will discuss how to co-create opportunities.

I liked the book! I have not yet implemented its strategies, but it immediately made me think about relationships in a new way, to be more concerned with maintaining the right relationsships and finding the give-take balance. If I ask for information, I try to give something back. This is an area of my life that will continue to be important, and I'm convinced that I will apply the parts from the book that I find useful. I'm sure that there is at least a few tips that you will find useful in this book!

The Devil's Heart (Star Trek: The Next Generation)
Published in Hardcover by Pocket Books (April, 1993)
Author: Carmen Carter
Average review score:

One of the best Star Trek novels to date!
Devil's Heart, in my opinion, is clearly one of the best Star Trek novels written to date! Throughout the book, the reader is taken all over history in delightful and intriguing ways. The author truly captured Picard's spirit and his love for archaeology. This novel has everything a Star Trek fan is looking for in a book, action, intrigue, mythology and a little mystery. The author set's an extremely well thought out plot and put's it in place extraordinarily well. This is one of the few books that I've actually read a couple times. It is easy to immerse yourself in this story. In reference to the audio tape read by Gates McFadden, she truly brings the story alive. I've listened to it countless times on the highway. The only unfortunate thing about the audio tape is that it's abridged. If there's ever a Star Trek book to recommend to somebody, this is the one. If you've not read this one, pick it up in any format you can. Thank you very much to the author for this one.

Excellent novel.
This is a very powerful novel, well-written and well-plotted. At first, I thought that it was going to bear too much resemblance to Original Series Novel #30, J.M. Dillard's "Demons" (Vulcan archaologist finds relic that proves dangerous, and leads to much death and devastation) but that is the extent of the similarities between the two; this book is much better written, and has a much more evolved plot. Then I thought that it was too close in concept to "The Lord of the Rings" (mystical item possesses its bearer, making him reluctant to let anyone else touch it, or to put it down, and becoming his "precious" to the detriment of his health, both physical and mental.) But there are enough differences to pass the "original concept" test, although if the book were not so well-written, I might be less tolerant on this score.

Definitely one of the better Star Trek books, good enough to be worth a look from non-Trek fans.

ST-TNG: The Devil's Heart
Star Trek-The Next Generation: THe Devil's Heart written by Carmen Carter is a book when read carefully gives you an impression the "Lord of the Rings" but with a Star Trek twist.

I've read this book for a second time and realize that it was one of the books used for the "Gateways" series of books that has transended to whole of the Star Trek genre. As this book tells of a Gateway chamber in the prologue, and the demise of Iconia through a nova of its sun.

Yes, Iconia was dead, but her legacy will remain as the Federation and its resources are always finding relics that relate to the once glorious Iconian culture. This book uses one of those found relics as the basis for a story of mystery, intrigue, morality, bloodlust, and truth. Could the dispairy in technologies trigger an unsettling of other races, just by the knowledge of Iconian superiority, could it foster fear and distrust?

This book fills all of these themes as Jean-Luc Picard is going to go through a true test of his own morality as "The Devil's Heart" a left over icon of the Iconian culture, a legendary object of unsurpassed power and mystery, is found.

This book moves quickly and is extremely engrossing as the Devil's Heart enables its possessor to control minds and amass countless wealth and can control the passage of time as well.

Romulans, Ferengi, and Klingons bring a spice of the TREK universe to this book as our hero Jean-Luc Picard trys to deal with the power and consequenses that are the Devil's Heart gifts. I must say I really enjoyed this book and it lays a foundation to other TREK books that will follow.
